FAMOUS RAVENS CELEBRATE JUBILEE

Famous Ravens celebrate Jubilee GLADESVILLE Ravens Sports Club celebrates 50 years in 2010 and will mark the occasion with a huge Golf Day (Friday July 30) and Anniversary Party (Saturday July 31) at Ryde-Parramatta Golf Club. The celebrations will be a chance for members old and new to get together, catch up with old friends, share many stories about “the good old days” and celebrate all that the club has been and still is to thousands of players and supporters over the past half century. Ravens’ top men’s teams have succeeded in the Sydney Inter-Urban Competition during the 1960s; NSW State League of the Soccer Federation of the 70s and 80s and Premier League divisions of Gladesville-Hornsby Association in the 90s through to present day. Ravens’ female players were foundation members in the formation of the hugely successful Gladesville-Hornsby Womens Association (now North West Sydney Women) in 1982. The club has grown into one of Australia’s largest women’s soccer clubs with more than 30 teams. Having entered the NSW Womens State League in 1988, it still plays in the Womens Super League of Football NSW and is the longest surviving club in the top levels of women’s competition under FNSW. Many players have gone on to represent at the highest levels of State and country and have still returned to lace up the boots in men’s and women’s Over 35s. Current president John ‘Jock’ Cunningham is typical of so many “Ravens”. Having started at the club as a 10-year-old in 1961, Jock has played, coached and administered at the club with several stints as president including this year which he describes as a “cameo return” for the privilege of leading the 50 Year Celebration Committee. The Anniversary Committee has unearthed many treasures of the past including graphic photos of the working bees in the early 1960s showing the club dads literally constructing the oval by hand from gullies full of blackberry bushes. More of the collected memorabilia will be on display at the 50th Anniversary Celebration night at Ryde- Parramatta Golf Club. All former Ravens and anyone involved with the club at any time over the 50 years are invited to join the club for the celebrations. Just log on to www.gladesvilleravens.com.au for more details.
