HUNTERS Hill residents living near St Joseph’s College Sports Oval have packed the Hunters Hill Council gallery to express their anger about a proposed development at 33 Augustine St on the corner of Paul St.

Nine written objections from homeowners in Augustine St and Paul St were received by council, which deferred its decision until a later date.

But council officers recommended approval because the proposal was allowed under the current zoning.

The site has an area of 739sq m, with 12.5m of frontage to Augustine St and 48.1m to Paul St.

The applicant, Christopher Jordan Architecture and Design, has requested the council allow for alterations and additions to the existing house - and build a new attached two-storey property with a garage and a carport.

Next door neighbour David Luscombe, of 31 Augustine St, spoke passionately against the proposal, complaining of its bulk and scale, which he said would overlook his property.

Jane Walker, of Paul St, and Jillian Goodwin, of Paul St, separately said the proposed second dwelling was “not in keeping with the character and streetscapes” of the area.

Neighbour Tony Evans, of 35 Augustine St, said the proposal’s parking requirements would cause traffic congestion in Paul St and put “further pressure on the street parking in front of our property”.

Councillors heard that parking was particularly hard to find on Saturday when St Joseph’s College Sports Oval hosts rugby and cricket matches as a member of the Greater Public Schools (GPS) on Saturday.
