2010 BATTLE FOR BENNELONG

Battle for Bennelong

The 2010 Battle for Bennelong in the upcoming federal election has taken on a new complexion following the sudden demise of Kevin Rudd as prime minister and his replacement by the left wing former deputy Julia Gillard.

Much attention will focus on the vital seat of Bennelong in TWT Territory dramatically won in the 2007 Rudd lead campaign by former ABC TV presenter and journalist Maxine McKew when she deposed incumbent MP and prime minister John Howard.

Maxine McKew was generally regarded as a protégé of Kevin Rudd who rewarded her with a number of senior government positions.

As prime minister Mr Rudd supported Maxine McKew actively in visiting the electorate on a number of occasions and held one of his “community cabinet meetings” in Bennelong at Epping Boys High School auditorium recently.

How the new prime minister Julia Gillard treats Maxine McKew in her new role will be viewed and observed with interest by political commentators and constituents alike.

Will the “special relationship” between PM and MP for Bennelong be maintained or will it make the target easier for a hard hitting and ambitious Liberal Party challenger in the person of former tennis ace John Alexander? Perhaps time alone will tell.

Two Down, One to Go?

Kevin Rudd Bennelong

Happier times for Kevin Rudd when as Labor Party Opposition Leader campaigning with his then star recruit Maxine McKew before the 2007 election with then Deputy NSW Premier and Ryde MP John Watkins. Mr Watkins has since quit State politics and now Kevin Rudd is a backbencher. What does the future hold for Maxine McKew?
