Gladesville
History
Gladesville was first known as Doody's Bay, named after the convict artist John Doody, who was granted 30 acres of land there in 1795. In 1817, former convict John Glade, who had lived in the area, acquired Doody's property, and the waterfront area on which the farm stood became known as Glade's Bay.
The popularity of the area got a significant boost in the early 1840' when lawyer William Billyard bought a chunk of Glade's property and constructed a wharf and road. He also began subdividing the land and in 1856 the name Gladesville appeared on one of the titles. In 1881 the first bridge over the Parramatta River was finished and as a result Gladesville boomed.
Famous Landmarks
On Bedlam Point are the remnants of the old asylum for the insane. The original buildings were designed by Colonial architect Mortimer Lewis. On the eastern end of the suburb is the superb concrete span of the new Gladesville Bridge, completed in 1964.
Real Estate & Design
While there is some light industrial development on the northern fringe, most of Gladesville is a combination of solid brick houses dating from early in the 20th century, and apartment buildings from the 1960's through to the present day.
Shopping
Clustered around Victoria Road are a diverse range of shops including supermarkets, delis, fashion, food, and wine.
Restaurants & Cafes
In the shopping centre are cafes with good coffee and snacks, and a few interesting restaurants featuring seafood, Asian and Italian.
Sports & Fitness
With the river being a dominant force in the area, there is rowing and sailing. Swimmers can take to the local Olympic pool, and there are squash and tennis facilities.
Schools, Education & Institutions
With its strong residential origins, you'll find a good range of State and church schools in the district. Some of the great schools like St Josephs and Riverview are close by.
Distance from CBD & Transportation
Gladesville is 9.5 km west of the CBD and is served by a frequent bus service and a ferry service that takes in some of Sydney's exquisite waterways on your way to the office.
